Hi, guys —

I am unbaptized and going through RCIA . We had a discussion today about Natural Family Planning (NFP) and the subject of vasectomy came up. I did not want to ask this in class but I have already had a vasectomy and want to know how to address this.

  • Will my baptism wash away this sin, and
  • Will this be an issue once I am baptized?

My wife is baptized and going through RCIA at the same time. We intend to join the Church this Easter. Any experience or advise you could share would be welcome.

Thank you so much!

Doug

Paul replied:

Dear Doug,

With your repentance, this sin will be forgiven with Baptism, as all sins are. Perhaps it would be good to talk to a priest about how you could best do penance for your sterilization.

One school of thought is that, as an act of justice, the repentant, sterilized person should practice Natural Family Planning (NFP), even though sterilized. It is a way to show your love for God by the monthly sacrifice you would have been doing to avoid pregnancy had you not gone through the life-thwarting procedure.

If it is reasonable and proportionate to have it reversed, that would be a good idea.

Talk to your priest and doctor.

Peace,

Paul
