The teaching of Christ is that sex is reserved for the covenant of marriage, when a man and a woman make a public, exclusive, and life-long commitment to each other before God.
The act of sex is an act with a meaning — a meaning of total and complete self-giving of each person to the other.
If you're not married, you haven't really given yourself totally to the other person. Even engagement is simply a period of final discernment for marriage. It's a promise, not a reality so the couple must wait until they are really married before having relations with each other.
