Peter Usher wrote:

Hi, guys —

After Pope Pius XII re-set the Easter Vigil to begin no earlier than sunset on Holy Saturday:

  • is it still Lent
  • or has Lent ended?

Peter

  { After Pius XII reset the Easter Vigil to begin no earlier than sunset on Holy Sat., has Lent ended? }

Bob replied:

Dear Peter,

Thanks for the question.

Lent ends when the Holy Thursday Mass begins.

Technically, the Triduum (Holy Thursday — to — Easter) is its own season.

Most Catholics continue to keep the Lenten disciplines through Easter, so in that sense, you could say that Lent ends when the Easter Vigil begins, but that is only in the popular sense, not in the formal sense.

Peace,

Bob Kirby

Peter replied:

Many thanks.

Peter
