Dear Anne,
Thank you for the question.
This man may want to identify as Catholic, but he does not live in accordance with the terms of being Catholic.
A true Catholic follows the precepts of the Church and Jesus Christ, Her Head. Abortion is a grave sin that cries out to Heaven for justice. Anyone involved with it can seek God's forgiveness but must turn away from this horrible act. I'm very sorry that he coerced you into this terrible act, and for that God will hold him more accountable for the crime. If he does not repent, he will be damned.
The Catholic Church had for many centuries considered abortion as an automatic excommunication (automatic losing of church membership) that only the Bishop could restore. Now it is possible to go to Confession to a priest for this sin and receive absolution. The only way he could be excommunicated now is if he were public about his sin (not a secret) and was unrepentant.
The Church doesn't generally kick people out who are sinners, but sometimes She should, for their own good. This issue has been in the media a lot lately because of pro-abortion politicians who present themselves for Holy Communion, while acting contrary to the Catholic faith. In the end, God will judge them, and the scandalous Bishops who permitted their abuses to go on so publicly.
- If you are Catholic seek out Confession.
- If you are not Catholic, consider becoming one so you can receive the assurance of absolution in this Holy Sacrament of Penance.
Jesus came to save and set up a Church to carry out His Ministry on Earth. Part of that ministry is bringing His forgiveness to souls who have a sorrow for their sins and who wish to be reunited with God in a good relationship. And while anyone can turn to God and ask for forgiveness at any time, doubts may linger in your mind whether you were really forgiven.
In the Sacrament of Penance (Confession), the absolution is complete, perfect and a guarantee. The same is true in Baptism, our sins are washed away. Jesus is the only way any of us gets to Heaven, so why not do what He wants and cooperate with Him to start a new life in God's Mercy and Care.
You deserve a new chance at a better life, but that ought to be a life guided by God's grace and wisdom—which will help keep you away from bad men like this.
Peace,
Bob Kirby
