Hi, guys —

If you don't mind me asking, I have a question about the obligation of going to Mass.

My parent is very busy, and she has to drive my siblings and I, all around to do our sports activities. We unfortunately cannot make it to Mass this weekend because of these activities.

  • Is it okay if we watch Mass virtually instead of going to Mass or should we try to go to Mass in person?

Thank you for your time and patience in answering my question!

Sincerely,

Alley

Eric replied:

Dear Alley,

Sorry we were not able to get back to you sooner.

You should always do what is reasonable to get to Mass. Sports activities are not really a sufficient excuse, at least in my opinion. I don't know about where you are, but in many places Mass is offered Saturday night when people are unable to make it on Sunday. Often, a more convenient Mass may be offered by another parish within a reasonable distance.

Check www.masstimes.com for details, however, if you are subject to your parent's decision to drive you, don't feel guilty yourself if you fail to convince them to take you to Mass.

I would express my desire to go to Mass and its importance to you, but if they refuse to take you, it's on them, not on you.

Eric

Dear Ally,

I would concur with what my colleague Eric said.

A previous reply to a question we received gives you a good rational for why going to the physical church building for Mass is MUCH better that any T.V. Mass:

I hope this helps,

Mike
