Hi, guys —

I have been reading about Purgatory and am very afraid. St. John Vianney said the average time in Purgatory is 100 years and one second is like a whole day of suffering.

I would appreciate some solace if possible. I am struggling with this.

Thank you.

Robert

  { Since I've been reading about Purgatory and am afraid, Is there anything I can do to obtain peace? }

Eric replied:

Robert,

She revealed that Jesus promised to those who observe the Feast of Divine Mercy (on the Sunday after Easter) and who go to Confession and receive Communion gain a complete remission of sins:

“My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable Mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender Mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender Mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and Mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy.”

You can also obtain a plenary indulgence if you do not wish to wait until next spring, but it requires:

  1. being free from all attachment to sin, even venial sin,
  2. Confession within (I believe) 14 days, and
  3. praying for the pope's intentions.

You can obtain a plenary indulgence for an act as simple as praying the Rosary in a group at church.

It's important not to let fear overtake you or focus too much on it. Remain humbly open to God working in your life, follow Him unreservedly and remove anything in your life that prevents you from following the Gospel and obeying, with His grace, His commandments.

Say "Yes" to Jesus, entrusting your life to Him, and accepting whatever He chooses to allow to happen or send your way as something that He can bring a greater good out of. Trust that Jesus is good, loving, and all-powerful and wants you, far more intensely than you want Him. Acquiesce to that desire of His; make yourself His (and offer yourself to Him). Live in the moment, not in the future or in the past; the devil wants you to focus on the past or the future to distract you from living in the present and taking things step-by-step.

Mike replied:

Dear Robert,

If you are living the sacramental life on a regular basis and praying for 1 1/2 hours daily; especially the prayers you listed, you are doing a great job!!

My colleague Eric said:
Live in the moment, not in the future or in the past; the devil wants you to focus on the past or the future to distract you from living in the present and taking things step-by-step.

He is exactly right!

We partake in Divine nature through the Eucharist. If suffering enters our life, unite it to the Cross of Jesus and let your suffering become one with His!

Robert replied:

Hi, guys --

Thank you for all your help. I have come across a book called Favorite Indulgenced Prayers.
It has helped me a lot.
