Hi, guys —

A Protestant brother challenged me about Our Lady of Fatima. He asked:

  • Why did Our Lady want people to "offer" Russia to her, like a pagan "goddess" asking for an offering from the people?
  • Why didn't she ask from God directly, since all nations are under the power of God?

Eric replied:

Canren,

This is a strange comment.

Consecrating Russia to her is entirely different from making a pagan "offering" from people. Pagans never consecrated nations to their gods. They offered animal and food sacrifices to their gods. Ask him to give a single example of a pagan goddess that requested that nations be "consecrated" to her.

To consecrate something is to set it apart for a purpose. In this case, consecrating Russia to Our Lady of Fatima means asking that the nation be entrusted to her maternal intercession for their conversion to Christ. Obviously this has nothing to do with pagan goddesses and what they would request.

I am not entirely sure what you mean by "Why didn't she ask from God directly, since all nations are under the power of God?"

  • Do you mean did she not ask us to pray to God directly for Russia?

Certainly we should do that, but her power, because of her abject humility (cf. Luke 1:48-52), is greater than ours and her prayers more effective (cf. James 5:16, 4:6, Psalm 138:6). 1 Timothy 2:1-2 says that intercessions should be offered for kings.

That's what we're asking Mary to do, make intercessions for Russia, that they would be converted and come under full obedience to Christ.

Eric
