Not Raphael wrote:

Hi, guys —

  • Can I, as a Catholic (in my teens), attend Mass and not receive the Eucharist because I am in a state of mortal sin and have not been able to make it to Confession?

Not Raphael

  { Can I attend Mass and "not receive" Communion, because I have mortal sins and need Confession? }

Paul replied:

Dear Raphael,

Yes!! Not only is it OK to attend Sunday Mass when you can't receive the Eucharist, but it's obligatory.

For weekday Masses, there is also no problem at all in attending Mass (without receiving the Eucharist.)

God bless,

Paul

Mike replied:

Dear Raphael,

I just wanted to add my two cents to Paul's answer.

Some readers may ask:

  • Why is it obligatory to go to Mass if you can't receive Communion?

For at least two reasons:

  1. It's the Third Commandment, and
  2. (Whether you only go to Mass on Sunday or can go on Sundays and during the week),
it's the greatest aid we can get in this culture to see this world through Catholic Christian eyes.  Every time we go to Mass we enter into that ONE and the SAME Sacrifice of Calvary (there's only One, Eternal Sacrifice) and receive many graces that aid and assist us in making good, holy, wholesome choices in this Christian life as we spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who have never met (Him, their Savior).

Just go to Confession before you receive the Eucharist.

Hope this helps,

Mike
