It depends on what you mean by "imagine". If you mean imagine in the sense of fantasize, with passion or rage (or even without), carrying out the deed in your heart against a specific person with malice or ill-will, that would be a sin, even if you didn't intend to carry it out. Jesus speaks of "committing adultery in one's heart" (Matthew 5:28) and the same applies to murder.
If, on the other hand, you're just "picturing" the killing, as if you were watching television (say, for example, you were writing a novel and wanted to work out the details) and were not killing anyone specific with any malice or ill-intent, that would not be sinful.
