Hi Jeanette,
Yes, missing Mass on Sunday or a Holy Day of Obligation — even just once — without a sufficient excuse is a serious sin.
So both missing Mass and receiving Communion without going to Confession after missing Mass would each be considered a matter of mortal sin and one cannot receive Communion without first confessing these sins in the sacrament of Penance.
